The story follows the endlessly arrogant King Knight, who is called to action when he hears of a tournament that promises riches and prestige. The result is a medley that once again successfully redefines the series' formula. While this combination of genres sounds quite strange, both of these halves are given enough nuance and playtime to feel robust. While the titular King Knight shoulder charges his way through a slew of platforming challenges that often feel like a devilishly constructed remix of previous titles, King of Cards is also a fully formed trading card game. Continuing this trend, Shovel Knight: King of Cards feels both exceedingly familiar and entirely new, this dichotomy stemming from the fact that it is essentially two different games crammed into one. While four releases over the course of five and a half years could be seen as a bit excessive, with each new installment Yacht Club Games has managed to reinvent the series' core gameplay through the addition of a new protagonist. Half a decade after its initial release, the acclaimed indie platformer Shovel Knight finally receives its third and final expansion.
